Featured Crimsonista:
Tessa Lyons-Laing '11

By Maddie Raffel

Summer 2009

After style-stalking her in class, Freeze caught up with Pfoho sophomore Tessa Lyons-Laing to get her stylish spin on things.

Who are your style icons?
Marion Cotillard, Edie Sedgwick, and Chloe Sevigny, when I'm brave.

How would you describe your style in 5 words?
Classic. Black. Feminine. Slight edge.

What is your favorite fashion-y TV show or film?
Coco Avant Chanel. I love how Chanel makes masculine look brilliantly feminine. I like to incorporate menswear and contrast it with pearls and heels—Chanel epitomizes that look.

Who is your favorite designer?
Yves Saint Laurent. I love the the way YSL incorporates inspiration from around the world. The Moroccan touch is my favorite.

What is your favorite place to shop in the area?
Mint Julep for dresses.

If you had $100 to spend on spring trends, what would you spend it on?
Woven black leather sandals.

How do you decide what to wear each day?
I start with one accent piece and then build an outfit around it. I don't like complicated looks so I usually turn to a few basics like black skinny JBrands or a black club monaco mini skirt to create a simple canvas.

What is the one item you can't live without?
My black cashmere scarf.

What style would you love to see make a comeback?
Flapper dresses. And not just for theme parties.

And of course, anything else that you think captures your sense of style!
I have a poster on my wall that I got in Paris this summer. It's an Yves Saint Laurent advertisement from the 90s and it says "La mode passe, le style demure". Fashions fades, style is eternal.
