Featured Crimsonista: Anne Browning

By Maddie Raffel

March 2009

After style-stalking her in class, Freeze caught up with Kirkland sophomore Anne Browning to get her stylish spin on things.

Who are your style icons?
I admire the style choices of Kate Moss and Katie Holmes.

How would you describe your style in 5 words?
Classic with a bohemian edge.

What is your favorite fashion-y TV show or film?
It's worth watching "The Talented Mr. Ripley" for clothes alone (especially the men's, but also the women's). Really throwback, 50's, tailored stuff with a Mediterranean feel. I love menswear-inspired clothing because of its clean lines, and of course the boyfriend look is conveniently in right now.

Who is your favorite designer?
Ralph Lauren. Great American sportswear will always be timeless.

What is your favorite place to shop in the area?
Urban Outfitters—relatively inexpensive and easy, there's a reason why you find one on so many college campuses.

If you had $100 to spend on a spring trend, what would you spend it on?
I like how boyfriend blazers with 80's-esque cuffed sleeves are in; a navy one with gold buttons thrown over a delicate floral dress—perfection.

How do you decide what to wear each day?
I just wake up with an idea of what to wear based on how I feel. It makes it easier to have a pretty cohesive closet—I have always been drawn to black, brown, navy, tan, gray—neutrals. I grew up in the South where pastels and Pulitzer reign, but people have told me I dress like a New Yorker because of my stoic color preferences. Does that make me a "steel magnolia"?

What is the one item you can't live without?
Boots! My favorites are my Fryes. I like to incorporate stuff that has meaning to me, and my mom gave me her Fryes from the 70's—wearing them makes me feel like I have a part of her and what she's walked though with me. I just bought another pair of Fryes and I plan on passing both pairs to my daughter—they’re so well made, they'll last forever.
