Still searching for that perfect spring break location? Miami and Cancun just not your scene? No worries. There are loads of cool places to go over spring break that aren’t necessarily the “traditional” destinations. Here are five ideas to get you started…
1. San Francisco, California. Lots of people only think of L.A. and San Diego when they think of spring break in the Golden State. But the city by the bay also has a ton to offer. Ride the famous cable cars, wander around Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf, or spend a day checking out Chinatown. You might even catch a concert at the nearby Fillmore or Shoreline amphitheatres. And you’ll still get the warmer weather you’re probably craving after the dreary couple of weeks we’ve been having here in Boston!
2. Vancouver, Canada. Loving the Olympics this year? Why not check out the host city in person? Vancouver may be admittedly a little chilly this time of year, but it is still undeniably beautiful and there are plenty of things to see and do. Vancouver has a fairly large theatre district and a growing downtown with lots of nightclubs. The surrounding area of British Columbia in general also offers skiing and snowboarding, and even horseback riding if strapping on a pair of skis isn’t really your thing.
3. Glasgow, Scotland. Chances are that even if you’ve been to Europe or the UK, you haven’t been to Glasgow. So why not check it out? If you’re artistically inclined, check out the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art or the Scottish Ballet. More into the nightlife? Head out to one of the dozens of clubs Glasgow has to offer. And this year, Harvard’s spring break happens to fall at the same time as Glasgow’s International Comedy Festival, so you might even catch a good show! Not sure you can afford going to Europe? Check out studentuniverse.com or statravel.com where your student status can snag you some excellent travel discounts.
4. Alternative Spring Break trips. If you want to spend your spring break giving back—and maybe also go somewhere awesome at the same time—check out PBHA’s host of alternative spring break trips. Most of them are based on the east coast of America, from north to south, although some go to international destinations as well. Spend your time serving the community with a group of similarly giving Harvardians!
5. Disneyland/Disney World. Okay. So you’re probably looking at me like I’m crazy right now, but as someone who has been to Disneyland over spring break, I can tell you it is actually an awesome trip. First of all, Harvard’s spring break falls at an off time, so the lines for everything are reasonably short—always a perk! Also, this time of year, the parks are full of college students. So grab some friends and regress back to childhood for a few days after a long stretch of being a responsible adult with midterms and papers. You know deep down you still love the mouse.
And this is, of course, just a tiny, tiny fraction of all the amazing places you could go this spring break. So get out there and have a fantastic vacation wherever in the world you go… You’ll be back at Harvard soon enough!
