Summer 2009
Dear Freeze Readers,
This year has flown by. It feels like yesterday that we were packing up our sophomore years and heading out for the summer, with Freeze still in its early stages but with ambitious goals for what it could become. And now it’s finally time to trade in our Uggs for flip-flops once again, to enjoy the walk to the Quad rather than dread it, to put our textbooks into storage and pull out our business-casual wardrobes (or our bikinis!).
This has been an amazing year for Freeze, and we have relished every minute of it. We produced over 125 articles and grew a global readership of over 36,000—beyond what we ever could have imagined at the year’s start. Our staff grew from under 10 to over 30 amazing, talented, and capable women who we are incredibly lucky to be able to work (and play) with. We were also fortunate enough to meet a lot of cute freshman boys (see this year’s Mr. Harvard Freshman Contest)!
Looking to next year, there are some exciting changes in store for Harvard; our calendar will be changing to be in line with that of other schools, the College will be switching to the General Education curriculum, and HUDS will be inventing another myriad of dishes featuring squash (at least we assume so).
There are some exciting changes in store for Freeze as well. When we come back in the fall, Freeze will be bigger and better than it has ever been. Freeze will be part of a national magazine called Her Campus that will have branches at many different colleges across the country. Harvard will be its launching point and will be the very first chapter of what is to become an exciting nationwide brand. Come this fall, Freeze will be called Her Campus Harvard.
What are we talking about? Earlier this year, the two of us, along with Freeze Board members Annie Wang and Kelly Peeler, were one of the winners in Harvard’s i3 Innovation Challenge—a business plan competition put on by the Entrepreneurship Forum, HSA, and TECH—with our idea, called Her Campus. Her Campus (HerCampus.com) is an online magazine for college women that will bring magazines into today’s digital world by creating a successful model for the online magazine. It will expand by creating branches at different colleges—beginning at Harvard—and eventually expanding to over 1000 colleges nationwide. Her Campus will fill the void of media aimed at college women, while serving as a model for how the print media industry can successfully make the transition online to keep up with today’s world.
As a winner of the i3 competition and with the help of Harvard Student Agencies, we will be able to make Her Campus a reality this summer. The two of us will be in New York City along with Annie, working on Her Campus in preparation for its launch at the end of the summer. Stephanie will also be interning at SELF Magazine at Condé Nast through the American Society of Magazine Editors Program, and Windsor will also be interning at Bloomingdale’s as an Intern in the Marketing department. We are incredibly excited for this summer and for all of the potential that we see in Her Campus in the years to come. The success we have seen with Freeze has been immensely rewarding and inspiring, and we are passionate about the development of this new, greater endeavor.
Come this fall, Freeze/Her Campus Harvard will be under new leadership, since the two of us will be leading Her Campus on the national level. We could not be more excited to introduce you to Olivia Ford, Her Campus Harvard Editor-in-Chief, and Elizabeth Ahern, Her Campus Harvard Publisher. We are sure that Olivia and Liz will do a wonderful job with Her Campus Harvard and feel fully confident leaving the organization in their hands.
Have questions? Email us—we’re happy to fill you in even more. In the meantime, enjoy Freeze’s summer issue, have an amazing summer, and look out for Her Campus Harvard when you come back in the fall. We think you’ll like it.
Freeze Love,
