If you want to eat healthily at college, you can – it just requires a little extra planning sometimes. Make easy substitutions like brown rice instead of white rice or egg whites instead of eggs. There are also always vegetables at meals, as well as a full salad bar. Eating in a dining hall is actually an ideal situation for eating healthily because you don’t even have to think about buying and preparing healthy foods – they’re already there! Just a few words of wisdom: Don’t try to skimp at meals to “save” calories for alcohol or dessert later, because this will just slow down your metabolism and prevent you from getting essential nutrients.
You can’t escape bad pictures of you, so you’ll always be aware of how you look.
Constant tagging of pictures on Facebook results in self-awareness to a whole new degree. It’s easier to stop at just one dessert when you know you’ll have to look at ten pictures of yourself from later that night. Just as celebrities must constantly keep up appearances because of tabloids, Facebook has forced college students to look any unhealthy weight gain straight in the face. It’s really easy to see if your body has changed between current pictures and the beginning of school, and that can be good motivation to stay in shape.
You have a built-in peer support group.
Possibly the most important thing about college that makes it easy to stay in shape is your built-in support group. You’ll always have a friend to accompany you to the gym or for a long walk. Even if all you feel like doing is staying in bed, your friends can help drag you out to a class at the gym.
