Whether the holidays were too kind to your closet or you got a little too excited at the sight of your favorite mall, either way you brought back way more new clothes than your minuscule dorm closet will hold. The solution? Grab your friends, have a good old-fashioned (and green) clothing swap, and get rid of those jeans that haven’t fit since freshman week. Here are a few tips to make the most out of your swap:
• If you haven’t worn it in the past six months, swap it! Plus, if in a burst of inspiration you decide you really need those tie-dye leggings, remember that you’re swapping with friends. I’m sure they’ll let you borrow them back if you ask nicely.
• Make sure to invite friends of all shapes and sizes. This will ensure everyone can participate.
• In choosing a location, it is best to pick a friend’s room with an in-suite bathroom. While most won’t mind changing in a big group, your more modest friends will appreciate the luxury.
• Pick a cause to donate the unclaimed items to after the swap. The Harvard Square Homeless Shelter collects used clothing year round. You can also check out Goodwill, which has a donation center at 520 Mass. Ave in Central Square. The Vietnam Veterans of America will pick your donations up from your house or dorm for free. They can be reached at (800) 775-VETS (8387).
• If you want to be really green, consider contacting your house or dorm Resource Efficiency Rep and collect some Green Points towards the Green Cup!
